Layers

If you’ve ever scene the animated movie Shrek (2001), you’ll understand this metaphor. If you have not taken the time to watch this movie, I suggest doing so.

As Shrek points out to his comrade donkey, onions have layers. Ogres have layers. He doesn’t mean that ogres have physical, tangible layers; he means ogres have many layers to who they are as beings. This applies to humans as well.

Onions have a peel-y outer skin, followed by layers upon layers that make up the onion itself. People are the same – an outside layer, which is what they present to the world. Then comes a bunch of different layers that peel back to expose the soul of the person.

Just because you see a particular part of a person and do not like it, does not mean that is all they are. There are always more layers to be peeled back and discovered. Just be patient. There is always more to a person than what meets the eye.
